Leeper House is Moving!!!

April 29, 2003
The Leeper House will move from the McNay Art
Museum to the Mitchell Lake Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday April
30, 2003. It will take the summer to reconstruct, retrofit, and
make beautiful the house - then it will be home for refuge visitors
and volunteers.
As the house is moved there will be a press conference
at the corner of Broadway and Austin Highway at the Frost Alamo
Heights Branch Office at 9:15 am to 10:15 am. Toni Moorhouse,
Dr. Chiego of the McNay Museum, Gene Habiger of SAWS, and Anne
Parrish President of MLWS will be filmed as the house goes by
and slows to take a left turn onto Broadway. The house has been
stripped down for the move - making it a huge box without a roof.
Its the movement and its future prospects and the fact that a
partnership has been forged to get this project going that we
will be cheering. The bank asks that no one park in their parking
lot but everyone is welcome to come watch.
The house will arrive at Mitchell Lake around
Noon. Then the remainder of the afternoon will be spent getting
it onto its moorings. SAWS will setup a viewing area in the new
parking lot for observers, but you will have to park out of the
way - probably on the alternate road. So stop by if you can and
visit the lake in the afternoon - the refuge is closed this summer
due to construction so this is a good time to get a peak of more
to come.
